In Mathematics, we have been learning to count in equal groups.
We did this in many ways: putting ourselves into many groups, putting counters into equal groups, putting objects we found around the class into equal groups.
oops..can you spot the mistake in the photo above? :)
Then we worked on number stories like this: A farmer has six sheep with dirty feet. He needs to clean these dirty feet. How many dirty feet does he need to clean?
The girls used straws to show the legs and rubber bands to show one equal group.
Now look at these pictures below.
Can you invent a number story that fits these equal groups?
Next we learned about arrays - a way of arranging objects into rows and columns.
What is special is that they can be read both ways.
Here is a photo from our lesson. Did you learn multiplication in this way?
When we have 2 x 3 it means 2 groups of 3 and 3 groups of 2.
Ms Mai explained that in Japanese there is only one way to read 2 x 3! How about your childhood? How did you learn to read 2 x 3? Did you learn about equal groups and how to read arrays? Have a chat with your daughter about what is similar and different to how you learned multiplication.

To practice reading arrays, Class 1A created an Array City.

In grade 1, we need to learn the multiplication facts of 2, 5 and 10. Some of us have learned it already and some need some more time. You can play the songs on mathletics to learn them by heart!
We are moving onto exploring division next as well as the relationship between multiplication and division.
